Using guides the first time through
« on: December 05, 2013, 06:26:44 PM »
Do you use a guide or walkthrough the very first time you play a game? Why? I personally don't, I like to play the game through first before seeking the help, if I need it, to find little bits and bobs

No I don't even if it takes 20 hours or 20 days for one mission. I never use a walkthrough

I use walkthroughs for games like Street Fighter to learn of specific methods to unlock characters. For everything else there's my sister, she has an uncanny eye for such stuff.

No way, never ever for the first playthrough. I always use them after that though, helping me get achievements and find secret stuff etc.

It depends on the game. If it's really cryptic, then I'll use a guide.

I only use a walkthrough/guide my first time through in 3 Cases:

1) I haven't played the game in forever and I open it up in the middle of a place and I have no idea where I am or what to do

2) I'm only playing the game to finish it and I don't care about "playing" it, only care for story, experience, etc. (Only ever happened once)

3) I've been stuck on a part for too damn long and I felt its time to move on before I start to get frustrated (Happened a few times)

I only use guides to find things that would normally be impossible to find on my own

Like super secret side quests and the likes.although if I get seriously stuck at some point then that's a different case

When something really frustrates me, I might use a guide solely to get past that thing.

Oh yeah, good point. Finding all those ingots or whatever they were on that one Fallout 3 DLC that I forget the name of would have been impossible without a guide. I admit I used one for that.

I only use guides after I completely through a game. In most cases anyways. Sometimes, I need help, like with Zelda 2

I sometimes use guides to follow builds on RPGs.

I was just looking at a guide for a fighter in NWN.

Like I said earlier, I only use guides when I am totally stuck.

I have this compulsive need for everything to be perfect. I use guides to get perfect things on just one run. Builds, rare items, anything that would get me an advantage in the game. Metagaming, if you will.

However, I refuse to use it to spoil the story or puzzles. Unless I'm stuck.

Same here. It's better put in your own effort in trying to pass the level/area that you're stuck in. It automatically makes it more interesting, but then again as you keep trying over and over it can get boring haha.
