Best videogame storylines?
« on: March 24, 2012, 01:41:47 PM »
I was just thinking about the best storylines in games, and wondered what you guys thought and what you think are the best stories told in games.
I have FFVII at the top of my list, it's the greatest all round game ever imo. Behind that I have both Star Wars Knights of the old republic games, I have Fahrenheit in there, Eternal Darkness: Sanitys requiem, Monkey Island and FFVI all deserve a mention too.

So what do you think to my choices, agree? Disagree?

The best storylines always belong to JRPGs. Very few amount of exceptions.

I don't know about very few exceptions. There's all the old point and clicks, like monkey island and survival horror like silent hill and Resident Evil. There's a lot more good stories outside of RPG's than people remember. RPG's have the advantage of course though, their full purpose is to tell you a story.
What's your favourite videogame story?

My favorite is the little ordinary orphan kid whose village is destroyed, he's the only survivor, and then he suddenly has this big 'save the world' destiny placed upon him for no reason.

Or everything on this list.

Whaaaaaaaat? ._.

Anyway, Heavy Rain, so I've heard. It's practically an interactive movie than a game. The only difference is that if you make mistakes, there's no going back. No game overs, it just continues, even if some or ALL of the protagonist dies.

I agree that FFVII in my opinion is the holder of the best storyline, or at least the most emotionally influential. Outside of that I would probably say Star Ocean: Till the end of time, I played that game before playing the ones before it and I still greatly loved the story, the ending was quite unique and strayed away from common "hero wins and everything is dandy" endings.
I also enjoyed FFIX for its symbolism, it has a very deep story despite the way it presents itself, FFVIII could be considered to be in possession of a great story if you apply the
(click to show/hide)
theory, which made the playthrough much more interesting and made more sense.
there are other games, I'll update once I remember them~

Castlevania can have some good story lines.
Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine has a decent one too.

I'm gonna add Portal (1&2) and Borderlands to my list.
Very simplistic stories but the atmosphere that goes with them is superb.

Tactics Ogre:The Knight of Lodis

Why don't people talk about this masterpiece of a game?
I mean even completely unrelated decisions will create an outcome for the future...

Go play it humans.

When they wanted to be I guess, but they had a tendency to milk Star Wars for all it was worth. Must be at least 30 Star Wars games, only a few gems in the rocks. Though their other non-star wars games were pretty good I hear.

Far Cry 3.
The game actually has a point unlike so many open-world style games out there (like GTA).

Scratch that. I've wised up after doing a lot of research on the gaming industry :P

And as for me, I'm not big on storylines but I think I was very interested with Earthbound.
