Title: RMVXA Master Tutorial
Post by: senpai_FisT on August 16, 2012, 07:25:33 PM
RPG Maker : The Tutorial

Since I introduced some of you guys to RPG Maker VX Ace, (RMVXA from now on  :P) it only seems fair that I show you how to use it. Now, before I start I've got to tell you that I'm no advance user myself but I can very well show beginners on how to use this program.

I've shifted this tutorial to Blogger : http://rmvxa.blogspot.com/

I find it easier there than here on smf, where I have to manage one big wall of text. Cheerio.

However, I am always willing to help you in any way possible. Have a nice day.

Keep those coming. Trying to keep this as error-free as possible.

I think I'm going to move this to blogger or something :\ It's getting hard to manage this.

Ellipse
Places tiles in a circular fashion. It cannot for perfect circles, due to the engine's limitation.

wut, also I love how you added the Alot :p

Also, how do you trigger an area transition?

I'll fix that. And what kind of area transitions are you thinking about? Ones that make you teleport as soon as you step on a tile? Or teleporting mid-cutscene?

VERY NICE!

Gotta say, based on your tutorials, making a game seems incredibly easy!
I wonder though, is there any way to make your own tiles and stuff (not saying that I know HOW to make tiles mind you, just asking if the option is available) or is it restricted only to the stock tiles the program has?

For that, you have to learn sprite art. There are countless of guides on the internet on sprite art. And no, you are not limited to tilesets on the RTP, there are many resource sites and artists on the internet who let you use their tiles, sprites. Be sure to read their T&C.

I've tried to learn using this program through various videos on youtube and even through the actual community of RPGMaker, but this tutorial actually speaks in a language that makes sense to beginners, other tutorials just pretend that the user knows what the hell they are talking about.

That uses a custom sideview script. There is one called Tankentai SBS which is easy to use. If you learn Ruby, you can create your own cool scripts like these ones.

hmm... Mapping is probably the only thing I can do now... the battle systems looks a bit too complicated to learn in one sitting.

For teleporting while stepping on a tile: Choose event mode and right click on the map. Click 'New quick event'>'Teleport..'. From the box, double click on destination, choose where to teleport.

For the latter : Go to page 2 of event commands and choose teleport. From the box, double click on destination, choose where to teleport.

I'm greatly looking forward to learning about events, thats probably the thing I struggled with the most. I think I only managed to learn how to make a chest contain an item, open and close (all that jazz). But that was through copying what someone on a video did, not really learning lol.

Well, good news is that I'm writing the event tutorial after I finish expanding the mapping tutorial. Bad news is I haven't slept for a while and I'll start on event tutorial after my sleep~

Er..sorry, I took it down for a bit of re-editing. Should be up right now.

Check this guide by indra. It has quite a good number of tips.

Check out the updated map tutorial.

Tutorial 4 is up.

Up next is a short tutorial on Event triggers and another tutorial on switches and self-switches. I need to brush up on my variables before I write a tutorial on it.

Added the short guide on event triggers as promised. If you think you need a little more explanation on it, I'm game.

http://rmvxa.blogspot.com/2012/08/5-event-triggers.html

Will post switches and self switches tommorow.

That took longer that I had expected. Tutorial 6 : http://rmvxa.blogspot.com/2012/08/6-switches-and-self-switches.html

If something seems off-key, tell me. I wasn't at my best when writing this.

Next tutorial is on Variables. I need to brush up on my variable skills, its gotten a bit rusty..

(That means it might take a while, meanwhile practice your mapping and eventing skills, especially the event commands.)

In case of doubt, PM me.

Before the next tutorial, I would like all of you (who are following my tutorials on RMVXA) to create a game from scratch using all that I have taught you. (Maps, doors, NPCs, Events, switches, etc.)

The only rule is to use only the RTP and there should be no combat. This is not a contest, just a test from me to you.

Scratch that, variable tutorial is going faster than I had expected.

I am not sure what the next on would be. Anything of your liking, perhaps?

http://rmvxa.blogspot.com/2012/08/8-cutscenes.html

That one took longer than I had expected, not because it was long but because my study material has arrived and I have to study. Ugh.

Next one is probably Basic Events II.

I really loved this guide. Even though it's small, it covers all the important stuff you need to know before writing a story/script for you game.

I got an English version of RPG maker which made learning all the easier. Remember the boxes that pop up when you point at something, boxes with Japanese text? It's in English now, making learning new features a breeze.

If anyone wants the 100% English version, PM me.

though messing around with everything kinda showed me 101 ways how not to change the battle system, which is always useful. I think that a battle script is needed indeed.

First of all, are you using the Japanese translated version? It is much better for you and me if you use the English version, the one I'm using.

(Much easier for me to explain since everything is in english.)

For an ABS you'll need scripts. To find scripts, google is your friend!

I'll show you how to install it however.

Open your script editor in RMVXA (you can do this by either going to "Tools>Script Editor" or just by pressing F11.

Once the script editor appears onscreen, turn your attention towards the box on the left. Scroll it down until you reach "Materials".

Click on an empty space between "Materials" and "Main Process". (You can create more 'empty spaces' with the insert key.)

Now that you have selected a location to place the script, copy the script you want and paste it onto the box on the right.

Press "OK" and save the project. Your script is now loaded.

As for scripts, there's so many out there. I prefer a front view battle system, so I use Yanfly's Battle Engine Ace (http://yanflychannel.wordpress.com/rmvxa/battle-scripts/ace-battle-engine/) (Which requires his core engine, which can be found on his site.

As for side view battle systems, Symphoria (http://symphonyan.org/rgss3/) seems to be the rage.

And by Active time, do you mean a Legend of Zelda like system, or a FF6 like system?

XAS is the best out there for VXA, currently.

It's a bit more complicated than most other scripts, but you'll do fine.

I had no idea when I started out as well. Your best bet to learn about them is to join the forums.

Don't tell them you have the pirated version. (ARR!)

Also, Yanfly's (http://yanflychannel.wordpress.com/) website. It has many of my favourite scripts.
