Title: Graphics Competition Discussion Thread
Post by: Light on April 02, 2012, 03:06:37 PM
If you have any questions about current, past, or future competitions (themes, rules, moderation, suggestions, etc.) or simply wish to discuss them in general, please post here.

I would add to the rules a link to the clock where you can easily check how much time you have.
Plus the entry must be new... not be made for another SOTW.

Added. Thanks Jonez.

I think we can safely say that the people that voted for the SOTW were just doing it for the heck of it lol
I'm sure the more easier competitions will do better~

I'm sure the more easier competitions will do better~

I hope so. If the next competition flops, then I'll probably stop the competitions indefinitely and hold the poll again when we have more members.

Also, sorry Jonez but I think it's better to vote the old-fashioned way, that way we can tell if anyone votes for themselves.

I need to discuss the next competition's theme with Jonez, and since he's away, it'll be postponed until either he has enough free time or after he gets back, which is Friday apparently.

No no, it's definitely going to be Intentionally Bad Drawings. I just need to discuss what topic you're gonna be drawing about.

The only competition you can feasibly do are those intentionally bad drawings.

Just saying, SOTW is mostly a waste of time.

Title: Re: Graphics Competition Discussion Thread

DOUBLE POSTING BECAUSE I CAN

Anyway, I'm gonna make the competitions monthly instead of weekly, seeing the limited selection of competitions to hold. Since that means longer deadlines, I can hold more complex competitions, or ones that take more work. Although I'm not sure how you all feel about doing more work for a competition with basically no reward. >_>

It can also rename a whole folder of images easy & quickly.

And with that said, unless you guys want to keep on doing intentionally bad drawings, I have no idea what the next one should be. Some ideas (http://www.arpegi.be/index.php/topic,403.0.html) would be great, if you have any.

Otherwise, the next intentionally bad drawings competition will start on the 18th.

How about one of these ideas?

Summers coming up so why not draw a summer scene?
Draw an anime character to be featured in an rp by Jonez or something?
Make a miniflipbook animation?

Make a miniflipbook animation?
1) That seems a like good suggestion, though we probably need to elaborate more on it.
2) The only people that would bother would be people who have something to do with Jonez's rp, there would be little point to it.
3) Would we need to video tape that?

1) I donnu ow to elaborate. We would need a focus, or a topic, something to do with the beach, but what would the object of interest be?
2) Good point. Never mind then
3) You would if its a plausible idea...
Title: Re: Graphics Competition Discussion Thread
Post by: Light on May 16, 2012, 02:08:34 AM
#1 could be used for one of the intentionally bad drawing's theme; something like "summer scenes" maybe. #3 could be plausible, but I think it would be easier to make gifs instead of recording it.

I think IBD's all the time is boring... why not paint something... or give a picture or a fragment of one and have us change or finish it. I dunno... just spouting ideas

Or how about something like what fakku has going on, where they give you a page from a manga with the text whited out and you supply your own text?

You're free to color it or add stuff or whatever, as long as you have the same amount of speech bubbles. Well, something like that anyway.

Although that would mean you'd have to know how to color it properly in the first place, which also means you'd need to know a few things about image editing. Unless you manually edit it and then scan the result, that is.

Light, why don't you take a picture from the internet that instead of ... making it very nice... Making it with paint or something as messy or creative as hell...? I mean... Cutting parts out and placing them on another place... Putting stuff in, drawing lines all over it... things like that.

I have a few ideas, though they are kind of simplistic, require more good placement than graphical skill.

1) Demotivational Posters- We could do "Demotivational Poster contests". A demotivational poster is basically this: http://www.marcofolio.net/images/stories/fun/imagedump/demotivational_posters/elephants.jpg
A normal pic, which is captioned for comedic effect.

One way we could do this is by Light offering us a single picture and we have to caption it and make it as funny as possible. The site used to make these is: http://bighugelabs.com/motivator.php
Its extremely easy to do, no graphic skill required, only average amount of common sense.

2) Meme Production- We could try our hand at producing a meme? I haven't fully thought this through but there seems to be so many running around lately that you never know, we might just be able to do it. If not then we could just vote on who did the best one, regardless if any of them are upto awesome meme standard. If you don't know what a meme is......then you have never lived =___=

3) Paint storyboarding- this is essentially the same as Intentionally bad drawings except for one thing. Light must give us a short story, we must sum it up in a story board manner using the program paint. Its obviously going to be terrible but its whoever manages to pull it off relatively well is the one who gets the cake =3

4) Caption Competition- My old forum used to do this, I think I requested this a while ago but was given no feedback.
Basically we are provided with a page from a manga, the speech bubbles are all cleared. So all that is left is the characters actions and empty speech bubbles. The goal is to fill in the speech bubbles with either dramatic, funny or whatever you want, so long as you are sure you can gain the votes of others.

We've done that already.... if anything make it a bi annual contest (held twice a year) If we always do this then I just wont compete because it'll get old and boring

I suppose I'll hold the poll again since we've got some new ideas now. Expect it sometime next week.

There's a stripped-down version of Photoshop for the iPhone, iirc.

I'll just add mine if there are no other entries until the end of the day. But really, this is getting tiring. >_>

exactly how many votes did the caption competition get? I think there should be a tracking system in the votes, to see who voted which. That way we can point fingers.
Title: Re: Graphics Competition Discussion Thread
Post by: Light on June 23, 2012, 05:32:16 AM
3 votes, which tied with "Other". The votes for "Other" were all over the place though, so caption competition won out.

Honestly, I think there's just not enough interest here to keep holding competitions anymore. It's not worth the effort  if in the end barely anyone enters. :/

Especially since we're supposed to be all about what the "entire community want as a whole" or something like that.

Complementing myself makes me feel special

Also, next month's competition will be Paint Storyboard, in accordance to the poll.

I'm afraid my entries would already look like casualties before even entering the field.

I'd be down for it but I'd probably be one of the sacrifices.
