Title: The Football (Soccer) thread
Post by: O:\msg on March 20, 2012, 04:24:25 PM
Does anybody on here like football? Who do you support?

I'm a huge Hull City fan, I live opposite the stadium and go to as many games as I can. We play top of the league tonight and we are already in the playoff places to get promoted to the Premier League.

It's the European championships this summer too, will you be supporting anybody?

Nice, I wouldn't mind going there myself. Messi is undoubtedly the best player in the world right now, probably ever.

I love soccer more than anything else (even more then A. Football)

I play on a Youth team, and I used to play on select before it got too expensive.

I love Real Madrid and Barcelona
AC and Inter Milan
Man. United and Chelsea
FC Dallas and LA Galaxy

My Fav. International team is England. Then Spain. Then Holland :)

I don't know why you like England, we suck donkey balls and don't play good football whatsoever. The last time we genuinely had a chance of winning something was 1996.

Wayne Rooney is my main reason. I actually met the guy once. We didn't have a conversation, though. At my youth soccer association, they had a clinic where a surprise "pro" was to come, and it was one of the FC Dallas players and Wayne Rooney.

Cool, we had a surprise visitor when I was a kid too, it was Clayton Blackmore who used to play for Man Utd in the 80's and 90's, but you wont have heard of him I doubt.

Any predictions for tonights game Chelsea vs Barcelona? I reckon 1-1 tonight as it's a Stamford Bridge, then Chelsea will lose 2-0 in the next leg.

Chelsea are well up for it, the biased ref gave barca 5 penaltys in the last game!

Here's a cool twist on football, golfoot! It looks fun.

They seem to be on a roll, but Bayern is a very strong opponent.
Title: Re: The Football (Soccer) thread
Post by: senpai_FisT on May 01, 2012, 07:22:08 AM
But Chelsea lost two of its main defenders: John Terry and Ivanovic in the finals. Ashley cole is the only consistent player IMO and he can easily mark either Robben or Ribery. I think Alex and Cahill will go centre and Luiz and Cole at full back(most probably Cole will be played on the side Robben does because he's more dangerous off the ball than on it.)

That is the least credible logic when it comes to football. It can always go either way.
Ask msg, he'll tell you about how Hull City, massive underdogs defeated Arsenal and Tottenham.

Yes, the odds lie 70:30 in favour of Bayern however, at the end of the day the only statistic that matter is the scoreline ;)

Aww come'on man :D! Football's more than just your favourite team! Its the game, the beautiful game!

Barça's overrated
Well, I agree and disagree with you on that one...their history isn't as decorated as Real Madrid or AC Milan, but you can't deny they're pure class. But I must say if it wasn't for Johan Cryuff, Barca wouldn't be as consistent they are today. And don't forget his student, Guardiola ;)

Yep, I was at both games.

I want Chelsea to win because they're English, but I think both teams are evenly matched. I expect a close game and 1 goal difference to win it.

What are your thoughts on todays Premier League finale? I can't see Man city slipping up, I expect them to thrash Q.P.R. by 4 goals and win the title on goal difference. I hope Bolton can get a win at Stoke and survive though.

Jesus, what a finish that was! Man Utd had won the title at the end of their game but City was still playing and got 2 goals in injury time. Gutted for Bolton going down though :(

What a game! Lived up to its hype as a cup final. Drogba and Cech; heroes of the night!

I expected Bayern to win when Chelsea conceded that penalty with Drogba's tackle. But no, Cech was a hero alright.
It's a pity John Terry didn't get to play; however with such a 'tackle' he shouldn't be allowed to.

And for those who didn't watch it : Bayern  (3) 1  -  1 (4)  Chelsea

In all honesty I think the teams are pretty evenly matched, it will be 1-1 or England will win it by 1 goal, 1-0 or 2-1.
You guys have vertonghen, fellaini, konpany, vanden borre, defour, lukaku, de bryne, mignolet, vermaelen, dembele and of course Eden Hazard. I would swap most of those for our players.

I'm not going to try to predict the winners at the Euros, anything can happen and usually does. The Danish were a massive shock winning it in 92, considering they didn't even qualify. And how many people predicted Greece in 2004?
I'm going to support England mainly and anybody else that plays good football will get the rest of my support.

Yeah I saw it confirmed a couple hours ago but the deal was announced on his twitter last week. I wasn't impressed on Saturday though, he didn't look as good as his reputation suggests.

I'm still waiting for Hulk to announce a move to Chelsea, if he does I think Chelsea can go on to win the premier league next season.

He won't get in a top EPL side and I doubt he would sign for a lower team. Unless Q.P.R offer him massive wages of course.

I hear Man Utd have signed Shinji Kagawa, but I don't know if it's true, there's nothing on Sky Sports or BBC yet.

Oooh Hull City just announced they are having a press conference at 3pm at the stadium, to announce the new manager I suppose. I might have a walk across road and watch it. The shirts are currently on sale for a tenner and I needed an excuse to go get one anyway.

I don't think we've got 2 goals in us but the defence is sound as long as we play deep so Terry doesn't get caught out on pace, Parker will have to fill the gap in front of them. 1-0 or 1-1 I think, everybody in England thinks we will be lucky to get a draw.

Balotelli
Never really liked the guy after all his self-praising. But after I saw him play, he's alright with me. I prefer strikers like him and Benzema than to pacey ones like Messi. (I'm not implying they're better than Messi)

Yeah but after the match he ran away because he was angry at the other members of his team because Italy lost because of "their" fault.

I think Balotelli was just showing his passion, I don't think he blamed anybody.

Wow, did Spain kick it up a notch for the final or what! I saw the team sheets and thought there's no way they are winning this playing a 4-6-0 formation, they only just scraped through every game so far. They were outstanding, no more sideways passing just for the sake of it, they went out and created chances. Italy never played bad, Spain were just at their very best.

I've been asked to pick which Man Utd tickets I'd like from the following:
29/09/2012 - Tottenham
20/10/2012 - Stoke City
24/11/2012 - QPR
15/12/2012 - Sunderland
29/12/2012 - West Brom
12/01/2013 - Liverpool
29/01/2013 - Southampton
02/03/2013 - Norwich
16/03/2013 - Reading
04/05/2013 - Chelsea

They come with the usual box and pre match meal at Old Trafford. I'm fancying Tottenham and Liverpool.

They usually are but FC Dallas is also usually one of the best. And people were actually thinking we were the best when we went to the MLS Cup for the first time in history (or at least I think it was). But we lost off a last minute goal. Then the FC Dallas didn't even make the playoffs (or tourney, whatever you wanna call it) and now we are literally the worst in the league

Lots of goals, usually, since the defence tactics are quite poor. If you're watching on TV, the camera sucks too; its a camera attached on a high perch right in the middle. However, I'd still watch it cause its f*cking football!

Comparing to the English football most teams would end up in the League 1 and a few in the championship league.

Be wary though, the atmosphere in the stadium is quite dull. No anthems or songs, just a bunch of guys yelling and clapping when someone scores.

It's the same at Hull City. We have a tiny corner next to the away fans where the hooligans go to banter and I always sit with them, anywhere else in the ground it's quiet with the odd bit of clapping.

Ugh..don't watch football for just one guy..watch football because it's football!

This. I will watch any football at any level, with any teams, and find it more entertaining than 99% of TV programs, films or other sport. Obviously I prefer good football, but low level stuff can be good too. I don't like any one player really, I'm a football fan, not a football supporter, there's a difference. I watch the team play, the way they hold a defensive line together and counter attack together. I see other things too that some "fans" dont, like the runs people make off the ball to create space for others, and clever positional play and reading of the game, for me mental attributes make up a greater percentage of ability than technical skills. Glory fans only notice 30 yard goals and the mazy runs, they don't notice players like Ian Ashbee that sit in front of the defence breaking up play and making life difficult for attackers. Only proper football fans appreciate guys like that but they are just as important, if not more so, than your Messi's and Ronaldo's.

LOL!! Ronaldo has had his eye cut open. I hope it was the one he winked with when he got Rooney sent off the cheating c***.

Everyone likes Messi because of how he plays.
Interesting that you mention a lot of top teams that you support, let me ask you something to see if you are a true football fan. If Yeovil Town were playing Accrington Stanley would you watch the game and clap if someone closed a player down so they couldn't make a pass? Would you even notice what they did?

I'm not knocking anybody by the way, we all love watching Barcelona and everybody appreciates world class players. True lovers of football go a lot deeper into understanding the game though. Being a casual supporter is fine, I'm a casual F1 watcher because I just like the best bits, I have no interest in the small details and it bores me, just like the non flashy stuff in football will bore someone that isn't a true football lover.
Did anybody watch Germany in the last Euro's? They sat back but as soon as the other team entered their half with the ball they sprinted to close down the opposition players to not allow them time and space. Football requires more than skill to be good at it, and it often goes unnoticed.

Yeah, I get that in foreign leagues or Champions league, commentators sometimes have a buzz about some young player and I like to see that. I loved it when Shaqiri showed Man Utd how to do it last year. He made established players like Carrick look like amateurs, I'd never heard of the kid but he was awesome.
Another star that never really got noticed here was that Belgian kid Defour. He is gonna sign for a big team one day and show his quality, I've seen him live and he was in a different league to the rest.

Belgium are awesome at the minute. I like Mignolet, he's a fantastic shot stopper and I hear the young goalkeeper at Chelsea(I forget his name) is even better. Add in Kompany, Vermaelen, Vertonghen, Lukaku and Hazard that you mentioned, Vanden borre showed promise, and Benteke is showing a lot now in the premier league. Mirrallas and De bruyne are also players I think can do really well. Seriously, I'd swap the Belgium squad for the England squad, I think Belgium are slightly better.

EDIT: Witsel and Fellaini, how could I forget them!

Fellaini is better where he is. Chelsea have mata, oscar, hazard, ramirez, essien, obi mikel l, lampard, romeau and mcheacran. Probably more I forgot too. Everton going places if they keep that team together, top 4 is a real possibilty although I think 6th is realistic.

To be fair, Japan is actually a decent team. They're Asia's finest, with Saudi Arabia just behind them.

Their main attacking strength is K. Honda and his excellent vision and passing. Sure, he's no Xavi but he does his job well.

You can identify him by his distinctive hair colour.

I went to watch Hull City today, we were playing bottom of the league who hadn't had a win all season. Easy three points right? We lost. Even worse than losing, the game was so shit I was on my phone the majority of the game. Not a single shot by either side in the first half I don't think. That's £30 wasted :(

Ugh, I was just watching West Ham and one of their best players got booed off the pitch by some of the crowd because he had a bad game. To be fair to him he was playing out of position due to injuries! Football fans are so fickle, next week when he scores they'll all be singing his name like they usually do, they aren't true fans, they don't know what a real fan is.

I had to redo all the formations myself, the default one's are a bit iffy. As for the players, Tom Huddleston is the best in defense and good in the midfield, Koren  is the best in the midfield and Aluko's the best at striker. I only have about 5 million pounds and I need to acquire a decent target man. Hull's best strikers aren't that tall or strong sadly and putting Huddleston in front is a waste of his defensive ability plus he isn't very fast.

Overall, I'd say Aluko's the best.

Me too. But I won't admit that in public, one of my best friends is a Liverpool fan and I give him so much shit I'd never be able to show my face again.

There was an FA Cup game played today, I might have mentioned it once or twice, a little team called Hull City were playing!
Hull City were huge favourites playing our local Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United from the third tier of English football. It started off poorly, Sheffield took a shock lead in the 19th minute with Hull looking like the third division side. We equalised on 42 minutes but within a minute of the restart Sheffield scored again and went in at half time deservedly leading 2-1.
Steve Bruce made two changes at half time and they had an immediate impact, Hull looked much better and Fryatt equalised on 49 minutes, and then had the ball in the net again minutes later but it was ruled out for offside.
Tom Huddlestone and Hulls third substitute Quinn made it 4-2 in a great turnaround but it wasn't finished there, Sheffield scored again to make it 4-3 with just a few minutes remaining and they went all out for the equaliser to take it to extra time.
We caught them on the break though and David Meyler made it 5-3 in added time to send Hull into their very first FA Cup final!
Hull City will play Arsenal and have a brilliant chance of qualifying for European competition for the very first time!

I've heard that he may be doing that as a subconscious way of releasing stress or emotions. If I remember correctly (Unfortunately missed the game), Suarez bit the player near the end of the game where there was more pressure for him and the team to score. But idk *shrugs*

Why do you hate the Dutch national team? I like how they play, and they are one of my favorites. I'm pretty sure they're gonna be kicking the other teams' asses. I believe only Germany, France or Argentina(And screw Brazil, idc if they're playing home, I hope they lose) can take them down. But I have to agree, I didn't like how Robben dived though. Well even if he didn't, the Mexican defender still would've brushed off his leg, without getting the ball first (Which is a foul)

Messi has actually been great, it's just that the teams they play are sticking three men on him. He's still racking up the goals and assists though.
Besides, Argentina are hardly a one man team, Lavezzi, Di Maria, Aguero, Mascherano, Higuain, Zabaleta are all world class and Garay, Demichelis, Gago, Rodriguez and Palacio are very very good too.

I want Messi, being a legend in football already, to hold the world cup at least once before they stop calling him out. He played extremely well today, I hate how every time he ran up 3 or 4 swizz defenders would barricade him. He had no choice but to pass, or cross but he still played well and put some good shots in. Vamos Argentina!, let Messi lead us to victory!

Uhm they're doing well? There's just way too many damn good keepers this year.
And you're expecting Courtois to be any less good? :P

No lol
I'm just saying that's why we haven't been seeing many goals. And that's not a good reason to judge the 'losing side' so quickly.

They just need to get their tactics right. Messi was playing centre last game and had three men on him, I'd have moved him out to the right to either take defenders away from the centre or to give him more space to cut inside and do his thing.

Yeah, Di maria kept messing up often. Funny how he's the one that scored though.

Did you see the news?
Brazil suffered their worst ever defeat, at home, in their own world cup. Their first competitive defeat at home in 39 years
Klose became the all time leading scorer at world cup finals.
Germany had already broke a record by getting to their 4th consecutive WC semi
Germany scored 4 goals in 6 minutes
Germany are the first team to ever score 7 in a WC semi
Germany will play in their 8th WC final - more than any other team
Germany broke the records for most goals scored by a nation at a WC

Europe > South America

I didn't underestimate anybody. Did they win a game of football last night? No.

They have only won each game by a single goal, most of them scored at the very end of a game, or by a penalty shoot out. They have hardly scored any goals at all and I would be surprised if it wasn't a record low for a team reaching the final.

And yes, you have the right to say your opinion. You do not however have the right to be rude, use foul language and say things that aren't true.

Do these quotes sound like somebody that underestimated Argentina?
Quote from: msg

Quote from: msg
Messi has actually been great, it's just that the teams they play are sticking three men on him. He's still racking up the goals and assists though.
Besides, Argentina are hardly a one man team, Lavezzi, Di Maria, Aguero, Mascherano, Higuain, Zabaleta are all world class and Garay, Demichelis, Gago, Rodriguez and Palacio are very very good too.

And anyway:

I just didn't like how you already said Holland will be facing Germany in the finals. Btw that offside goal was onside so they actually should've won in 90 minutes if the dutch didn't score back. Btw Spain won most of their matches with a goal difference of 1 in the last world cup, which is weird cause Argentina's doing the same.

Boring to non Argentina fans. Well yeah it sorta was but they did put in some promising shots. Especiay that onside goal which was called offside. It was more interesting around 80 minutes and extra time, cause if one team had scored just one goal they would be advancing.

Everybody does, they have no class whatsoever.
See here: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/worldcup2014/article-2657667/Argentina-face-FIFA-disciplinary-action-players-posed-Falklands-banner-friendly.html
1. Politics has no place in sport.
2. The people of the Falklands voted to remain British with a 99% majority. By this action they are ignoring a democratic vote.

And also: www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/worldcup/world-cup-2014-argentina-fans-mock-injured-neymar-by-celebrating-with-spinal-cord-skeleton-9587586.html
After he was hit in the back Neymar feared he was paralysed and couldn't feel his legs: http://www.goal.com/en/news/3790/world-cup-2014/2014/07/06/4940118/neymar-couldnt-feel-his-legs-after-injury-scolari
My father had a spinal injury and is now in a wheelchair. It's not as simple as "you just can't feel your legs", there's much more too it than that. You don't know when you need the toilet so end up shitting yourself, you get muscle spasms in your legs which can throw you out of your wheelchair, you have trouble with your organs from sitting all the time, you have to set your alarm for every couple of hours during the night so you can turn yourself over and not develop bed sores so you never get a good sleep...... I could go on and on but the short version is: Your life is f***ing shit.

So yeah, as long as Argentina don't win I couldn't care less.

No they deserved first :( the last time they won a world cup was 24 years ago I think. I blame the manager for subbing off lavezzi and higuain :/

I was just thinking that.

Plus they were nowhere near as good as many other teams throughout the competition, they were steady and solid, nothing special. They were lucky to get some late goals due to having the best player in the world playing for them.

Umm...ok.So being a steady and solid team and having the best player in the world isn't considered special then?

Are Argentina '86 considered "special"? No. They are considered an average team dragged through by the brilliiance of Maradona. Steady and solid doesn't mean special in any language I know.

It's a TEAM sport, not a "one best player" and the other players sport.

Ironic considering most of the teams these year was one best player and others.

And not one of those kind of teams won the world cup. The best team won the world cup.

Went to watch Kerala Blasters vs Atletico De Kolkata yesterday.

Luis Garcia had his phantom goal disallowed in the last minute. This time it clearly crossed the line but the referee didn't have a clear look at the incident and so the game was allowed to continue.

Went to watch Kerala Blasters vs Chennaiyin FC, semi finals, first leg.

I thought seeing Nesta in person was the highlight of my visit but no, it has to be this goal.

Also, there were about 61,000 people in that stadium.

Check out Sampdoria's unconventional and wildly experimental 0-0-10 formation.

Of course, it didn't work out for them and they ended up losing by 3 nil.

Exactly 7 years ago today I was at Wembley Stadium to see Hull City get promoted to the Premier League for the first time in their history.

But that's not the only time that May 24th has been lucky for us. On the final day of the 2008-09 season, we needed to match or better the result of Newcastle United to avoid the drop. Although May 24th 2009 ended in a 1-0 defeat to Manchester United, the football gods shone on City again, Newcastle could not fare any better against Aston Villa when losing 1-0 and safety was secured. By the narrowest of margins, we managed to stay up by a point.

In a bizarre twist of fate, the Red Devils will again be the opponents who determine the Tigers' fate when they arrive at the KC Stadium today. And it is Newcastle who are again battling against City to stave off the dreaded drop.

The odds may be against us but I believe we can do it, I HAVE to believe we can do it, it's our lucky day! A win coupled with a Newcastle defeat will again see us stay up by a single point.

Today is going to be emotional no matter what happens. Keep dreaming, and keep believing :)

It was one of the best matches I have ever seen.
I wonder how they fair in the match versus Spain next week.
