Title: Programs for GFX?
Post by: NekoJonez on May 24, 2014, 02:30:51 PM
Which programs (besides PhotoShop) would you use for making wallpapers and signatures. And which programs shouldn't be used to make things?

Opinions please.

GIMP would be the best alternative to Photoshop. It's free, but it still has most of Photoshop's features and whatever is missing can usually be found as a plugin.

I don't think it's relevant to say which programs to use or not to use. They're just tools, and which tool you use doesn't really matter as long as you like what you make using that tool and are comfortable using it.

What about InkScape?

Inkscape is mostly for vector work, like creating new fonts, logos, or designs for t-shirts.

It's possible to make wallpapers or signatures with it, just not the usual "anime/video game character with fancy effects and text" kind.

I mainly use photoshop for signatures and stuff, sssooommmeeetimes for lineart.
Although Gimp would be a better choice for lines imo. Also for rendering.
I use FireAlpaca for coloring and/or drawing, if that counts.

Can anybody become a pro at GFX?

If your goal is just to make art, use whatever the hell you want. Photoshop, Inkscape, MS Paint, MS Excel, Notepad, whatever.

Otherwise, it'd probably be best to stick to Photoshop or GIMP if you just want to make signatures and wallpapers.

Can anybody become a pro at GFX?

I'd say so, yeah. Even if you don't have an eye for art, learning GFX isn't terribly difficult, what with all the many, many tutorials to learn from. You just need time and a willingness to learn.

Making money off of it isn't too hard either, but I wouldn't recommend trying to live off of GFX work unless you have a passion for it.

Just stick with Photoshop/GIMP. If you're not a fan of pirating then use GIMP or pay the US$10 for Photoshop CC.

Can anybody become a pro at GFX?
Sure whatever, but people who are flaky and think it's an easy way to make a buck won't last for long. People who are especially lazy and coast on a basic skillset won't be pro for long. You have to constantly work at it and get better. You won't just suddenly "get" it. It takes a certain mindset to make it work consistently.

The Notepad is the origin of all art. A true artist cannot live without The Notepad. Let us pray.
