Melodia smiled a little, still clutching the staff from before. "Yeah..." She said quietly, checking to see if the other corners had anything in them. "...hey, a door..." She turned the handle and opened it. "It goes right back to the street." She propped it open with a large stone from right outside the door so the room could get some better light. The girl then placed the candle in the middle of the room. "Can we tell what's still good to use with this light?" She asked. "I want these wands to get used, not sit around in the dust forever... That wouldn't be right."

"We would have  to test them..... We do have to head back to the group eventually, perhaps Torah can run this shop in the mean time? no? Perhaps you should try the untested one, but be careful Melodia.

"I wouldn't know what any of these are worth.." Melodia replied. "Maybe we could hand them out to people who can't afford wands from other shops." She looked to the untested wand. "I don't know how to try a wand..." She picked it up and waved it around a little like a fake magician would. "Like this?" Suddenly the ceiling began to light up. It had been covered in some of that magic-reactive metal the whole time! "Oh wow!" She exclaimed. "Now the light in here is much better!"

Melodia grinned from ear to ear, idly walking outside to see if anyone noticed. "Hey, there's a guy at the big house Torah went to..." She pointed to the count's large home, where an elderly man that looked pretty well to do was standing on the balcony. "I thought no one was allowed to see the count.."

The elderly man was looking about and idly yelling at the guards below about something, and his gaze stopped right at Melodia, who was in the perfect place to be seen from the home.

Melodia froze, not sure what she should do. After a moment, she turned to Askardi. "He's looking at me... What should I do?"

Melodia watched as the old man called a guard to say something to him, then shoo'd him and went back inside. "Uh... I'm not sure if it was good or bad." She replied, walking back inside to put the wand she was holding back on the table they found it.

A very flustered looking guard walked inside, looking a little lost but relieved. He didn't look like the other guards, and was probably either a new recruit or someone's personal guard. An ornate helmet covered his head, obscuring his true appearance. "I've been asked to escort the girl to the mansion on the hill," he said. "The count would like to speak with her. You both may come, but I don't know if you both will be allowed inside."

"All the other guards hate me," Melodia replied. "What if you're lying?"

"You do right to mistrust me," The guard replied. "We've been hearing of all the bad things from a man who was only allowed entrance when the count went for fresh air. That is why the count sent me alone. I'm his personal bodyguard and assistant. I take no orders from the head guard." He did the stereotypical guard's bow, a little less flustered now. "Please, come with me. I swear upon my life there will be no trickery."

Melodia looked back to Askardi. "Should we go?" She asked.

The guard nodded and led them to the mansion on the hill. After a few minutes of waiting, they were both allowed inside and led to the upper floor. The guard then stepped back and excused himself.

The old man from before walked inside with Torah, giving him a pat on the back. "Remember, show him that letter and give him the appropriate punishment for his misdeeds. Any kind of punishment you think is right. If you like the job, then come back tomorrow and we'll hold a small ceremony to appoint you." He ushered the guard from before over, who began leading Torah out.

Torah stopped next to Melodia and Askardi for a moment. "Things are really turning around here," He whispered. "I should've done this sooner. Good luck to you guys." He began to leave with the guard once again.

The man looked at the two people for a moment. "Hmm..." He muttered. "I am Clarus Martin, the count of this town. What are your names?"

"My name's Melodia," Melodia replied. "I thought my last name was Zifnir, but I guess it's actually Enfys." She scratched her head a little, still kind of confused about that bit.

"And I would like to speak to her as well," Clarus replied. "But please, you first. I insist."

Melodia nodded. "I want to know...why does everyone here hate me? Were you the one who told them being crazy was contagious and crazy people had to be confined?" She asked.

"I never told them that. That's an absurd notion!" Clarus said. "And the only time I have ever said something anything close to the latter was when you were born and I told the head of the guard to make sure you were carefully monitored by your guardian and schoolteachers until you were five, so we could have been sure your mother's affliction didn't affect you."

Melodia frowned. "Well he took it to mean I should be raised by my grandma on an island about three days away from here, and I wasn't ever supposed to leave her yard, ever." She stated. "This is only my fifth day out of my grandma's yard."

Clarus gasped. "There's been corruption this long in my guards' ranks?!" He exclaimed. "So THAT'S why they urged me to stay inside. Not because of the threat of encroaching dragon territory! I will rectify this as soon as possible. What things do you want? Some money? Your parents' home to be cleaned so you may live there? I will make this right!"

"No sir, I'm fine with what I have..." Melodia replied. "Didn't you have a question, too?"

"Ah, yes. Thank you for reminding me." Clarus said. "I was wondering if you were reopening your parents' shop."

Melodia shook her head. "I don't know the first thing about magic, let alone selling things..."

"Ah, THAT grandmother was the one who raised you..." Clarus muttered. "The one who hates magic. Now I'm understanding the situation..."

Suddenly, a little girl ran into the room and hid behind Clarus. "Grandpa, there's a monster!" She cried, pointing to Nom, who had apparently tried to play.

Melodia giggled. "It's alright. Nom is friendly. Like a pet, except if the pet was more like your sibling." She said, petting the little dragon.

Clarus smiled. "Well there's something I've never seen before. How did you tame it?" He looked to the little girl behind him. "Look, the little creature isn't becoming angry for being petted."

Melodia crouched down and showed the little girl how tame Nom was before letting Nom go and initiate (or attempt to) a little bit of play. She stood back up and looked back to Clarus. "You get it in the egg and when it hatches, you raise it."

"That's very simple. Maybe we could adopt pets like these if we tried your method." Clarus replied, watching the little girl and the little dragon run off to play. He looked to Askardi. "Now, what about you? Why have you come here?"

"I came for Melidias safety and for another reason of my own. You see, Im not from this land, rather, I come from far away. As far as Worlds End. My people were killed, leaving me the lone survivor... and outcast. The men I seek were devils unspeakable! But this tail is not for young ears."

Melodia quietly ushered the little girl out of the room and then left herself.

The guard actually followed her and closed the door behind him. It was probably safe to say that he probably considered himself young.

The two of them then put their ears to the door to see if they could hear anything.

"I only want to help," the count replied. "You went through all this trouble to come to this corrupted town and endure its evils... The least I could do is help you with something." He smiled, looking a bit awkward. It almost looked like he had forgotten how to talk to people.

"What kind of information and assurance?" Clarus asked. "I may be able to help you with both."

Melodia could barely hear anything through the door, so she gave up to go sit in a chair and think for a little bit.

"Hmm..." Clarus said. "I know nothing else of your people, but there has been a legend around these parts about a demon..." He cleared his throat. "This will only be the short version, for it would be rude if I spent an hour retelling the story when there's a copy of the book I could give you to read on your own time instead." He picked up a book and opened it to a page in the beginning. "A demon of hell shall rise every five thousand years and control his armies from an adult human body sacrificed to him." He closed the book and offered it to Askardi, in case the man wished to read more about it. "I've heard the book sells in other places as a fiction story," Clarus mused. "Though it was written in this land as a chronicle of the legend that was passed down and showing signs of being warped by oral tradition."

"Why thank you," Clarus replied, taking the quill and placing it next to an ordinary one on a nearby desk. He opened the door. "You two can stop eavesdropping, now..." The old man smiled. "Please, come back in."

Melodia blushed a little, embarrassed that she was caught, and walked back into the room.

The young guard walked back inside and stood next to the door, as always. "I apologize, sir," He muttered. "I'm just not used to you speaking to people alone."

"I don't know," Melodia replied. "Go back to the group, I guess..." She thought for a moment. "Wait, the wands at..."

"There are still wands in your parents' store?" Clarus asked.

"Yes sir..." Melodia said. "I...I want to give them to people who can't afford wands. They shouldn't go unused!"

The count smiled. "If you need to go to the group you mentioned as soon as possible, then I will go out with my personal guard and hand them out myself." He said. "It's the least I could do, if there's nothing else I can do to make up for what the guards did."
