I need some info on PS3
« on: August 14, 2012, 04:57:03 PM »
Yo, PS3 owners, I am looking to buy a PS3 (A 160GB Slim model.) and I need your help.
What are its pros and cons? No, I don't need copy-pasta from other sites, I need your firsthand experience with it.
And try not to mention other consoles in this thread, let's keep this a PS3-only one.

That entirely depends. What kind of pros and cons are you trying to find?

My PS3 controller seems to wander around the house when I'm not home.. Last time I saw it, it was on my desk. Now it has disappeared.

I've been through quite a few PS3's so I think I can fill you in on what I experienced.

Pros: It has free online gaming, and some good discounts in the PS Store
I've noticed that the online gaming community of the PS tends to a lot lest bitchy and hostile, compared to that of Microsoft's pretentious peeps.
Despite what people say, the PS3 actually has good resolution and screen quality, on par with the Xbox 360.
Considering the size of the PS3's memory you just mentioned, you shouldn't find yourself needing to delete games very often to make room for new ones.
If untampered with, PS3's can be one of the most long lasting (major) consoles out there.
Blu ray compatible, who doesn't like Blu ray? Well okay I don't, but a lot of people do.

Cons: Despite the PS3's longevity, its pretty darn fragile. So you'd need to be pretty careful with the bugger if you want it to last. The same goes for the controllers, those things can break pretty easy.
The repair costs are outrageous, some are even as much as a new PS3.
The cons of the PS3 are more or less only when something goes wrong, so long as it is up and running its a very reliable console and I would recommend it fully.

Good info, thanks.

How are the FPS games? Is aiming frustrating?

FPS are fine. The aiming is not at all frustrating unless you play with super high sensitivity.

You have to get used to the aiming system though.

I tried playing Rainbow Six Vegas using my X360 controller and it wasn't that hard to aim thanks to aim assist. Quick 180 degree turns are going to be a problem though...

I know I'm a bit late, but...

Pros:

  • Controllers are wireless and chargeable, as opposed to Xbox 360's controllers that use batteries can't be charged without a battery pack
  • Good selection of games both on disc and digitally
  • PS1 Classics and some Minis are also compatible with the PSP
  • PS2 and PS3 video/audio cables are interchangeable, so if you have both systems you don't have to go out and get a new set of cables
  • Backwards compatible with PS1 discs
  • Region-free, to the point that you can create and use (for example) a Japanese PSN account and (for example) a Japanese PSN money card in any region PS3, allowing you to obtain any PSN games you want
  • Compatible with Blu-Ray and DVDs
  • Has HD capabilities
  • Online Multiplayer is free, as opposed to the Xbox 360.
Cons:
  • If your controller doesn't charge, you have to get a new one as the battery isn't replaceable
  • Some PS2 games bought from PSN have slight incompatibility issues that, although not affecting the game at all, can sometimes be hard onthe eyes or ears
  • NOT compatible with PS2 discs. PS2 games can only be played on PS3 if bought from PSN
  • Region-free only applicable to PS3 and PSN games. Japanese PS1 discs CANNOT be used in a US PS3. Presumably this is also the same for DVDs and Blue-Rays, but I have no idea as I don't have any foreign DVDs or Blu-Rays to test with
  • You have to keep the account the games were bought by on your console, or you won't be able to play any of the games bought by that account.
