Nah, I think coding is a core skill when it comes to game development. Sure, it might be hypocritical coming from me, an RPG Maker user but pretty much everything is coding. Game engines are mostly pre-written code accessible through a WSIWYG editor. When people say "Indie Game Developer" they're thinking being a game designer. A good designer should be able to understand how hard and time consuming it is to implement something he wants. To do that, he must understand how coding works. Like, you don't need to be a code guru like John Carmack. Just having a basic understanding of the logic behind object oriented programming helps.
