I love random encounters, I pretend to hate them but in truth they make my anus tingle with joy.

I love battling and grinding in general too, random encounters make that aspect pretty easy. My only tiff with it is when you are like lv100 with everything you could possibly need, thus random encounters become useless, but still rather fun since you can bitch slap everything in one hit.

How 'frequent' would someone like it in general? By 'frequent', I mean an encounter per number of steps.

(e.g : 1/40 - One encounter per 40 steps.)

40 steps? that sounds way too long for my liking, 15-25 steps is more my taste. But I guess it depends on the player too.

edit: I only just realized what you were getting at, I think the average player would agree with the 15-25 steps (in terms of RPGs like Final Fantasy) but like Mizzy-poo said, it depends on the style of the RPG.

Yeah, that's too infrequent.
You'd reach the boss underleveled. I say about 1 every 25 steps

In Pokemon White, it took me 1 and a half day to reach victory road.
In Black 2, it took me 4 days.

Usually, I don't like them much. I understand the importance, but if your overleved, just waiting to get to the boss and killing everything in 1 hit, it becomes a nuisance. I often prefer something which you can avoid.
I really like what they did in Ar Tonelico, though. You get 6-8 encounters per area (with a meter telling how many steps are left for the next one, more or less) and then to get more of them, you can just explore the area as you wish, until you get a Boss, sub-boss or quit the area.
