Since it slows down the site for some people I am thinking of disabling or not allowing gifs and such in signatures and as avatars...
It would be too bad but before I make a new rule or do stuff against it in the admin board... what do you guys think... Does this idea get a green or a red light..
-
But couldn't said people who find themselves loading pages for a while just.....disable sigs from their view? That way it doesn't affect others~

True...
So, better maybe no animated avatars?
-
well i don't think that if i'm the only one with this prob it may be because of my pc or safari. so if only i have this prob i sugsest that you just keep it like that.
-
Animated avatars don't usually have a large file-size, so I don' think they'd be too much of a problem. If you want, couldn't you just add a rule that avatars and/or signatures can't be over a certain file-size?
-
Well... I have some issues with small gif avatar's like my previous one and Maccaman's... The page loads awfully slow or freezes for some seconds to load the gif.

There should be an option for that but ... you always could go host it somewhere else but it still doesn't take away the size problem.
-
I mean make it a rule. Hosted here or not, if say, a user's avatar/signature is over a certain file-size, you temporarily remove it and ask the user to change it.
-
Hrm... Well... That could be a good idea...
(Err, speaking about the rules... I seriously need to format them out / update them =P )
-
Nah, I use mobile broadband or my phone and it's never been a problem for me, are people still on dial up or something?
-
It could also depend on your browser.
-
I only want a GIF as signature :( Don't disable it!
-
I am listing to you guys... So... I don't do anything (yet)

I'm thinking we should definitely keep signatures, and also that ShreddyWheat should put the spider sig back on =3

I'm just teasing Jonez.

Unless I get a valid complaint, I'm against disabling either.
-
Well look at it like this guys, once a gif is loaded for a new member, its in the browsers "cash" so in other words, it only loads once, and if you really have super sucky internet, go to your Tools option and disable images
-
as a Owner of one of the Suckies (Maybe not ) net I can say to this Nay
-
....
You dislike my chicken?
I dislike you.
(no i don't ;D)
-
If you disable gifs, that defeats the purpuse of giving us the power to disable them from siggys and such. You can also limit the amounts of post per page there too. If you adjust that to its lowest setting Im sure itd get faster
-
okay so as i see it now, everyone wants to keep the gifs alive

Okay... I keep them alive for now... If anyone has a complaint or something to add... I leave this open, for now.

Just stop using Internet explorer

Pardon me ... But I use the dev versions of Chrome.

I don't think disabling gifs is needed.
Every user can disable sigs themself. Also loading images shouldn't really be a problem because images should go to the browser cache and are also read from there later. Only drawing the image by the browser might slow page load down.
-
I say make it an option for users
