Title: Anime/Manga recommendation thread
Post by: Toffee on May 03, 2012, 03:08:51 AM
This is for you people to ask for recommendations on some anime and manga or just to proclaim to the world some awesome series that you've found for yourself.

Now, I'll start

Anime:
- Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu = One of the most hilarious rom/com animes I've ever seen.

Manga:
- Kimi no Iru Machi (Ongoing) = A dramatic tale of love, loss and all the problems you may face when searching for your loved one
- Ai Yori Aoshi (Completed) = Seriously, I have no words to describe this, it's quite possibly the most touching and most heartwarming story I have ever read. And this is coming from a guy who has read Love Hina, Ah! My Goddess, And LOTS and LOTS of other romance mangas.

Bloody Monday and Rabbit doubt are only available as manga sorry.

However, Mirrai Nikki DOES have an anime, and it is a definite MUST WATCH! (though it it better to read the manga beforehand). AFAIK, it is not on Netflix.

Can anyone recommend some manga for me to read?

The most important thing is that the series have finished publishing. Preferably less action-oriented and not so much gore and/or horror; more on the light-hearted side, I guess. Other than that, I'll take pretty much anything. Comedy, romance, psychological, sci-fi, etc. Oh, except sports.

Maybe Ergo Proxy, if you haven't already. That's pretty heavy on the psychological aspect.

I've watched the anime adaptations of both of them, so probably not. :/

You sure it's not Chrono Trigger or Chrono Crusade? I can't find anything about a Chrono Cross anime.

Try Btooom! It's kind of like Hunger Games in a sense. Oh, and expect some rape scenes along the way. :\

It sucks that it's a monthly manga. And there are even times when a whole month passes without a new chapter :\

Anyways, I recommend these manga

- Midori No Hibi (Midori Days)
(click to show/hide)

- Ai Kora (Love Collage)
(click to show/hide)

- Koharu No Hibi (Koharu Days)
(click to show/hide)

The first two are from the same author so expect the same artstyle. And I recommend reading Midori no Hibi before Ai Kora (just for the simple fact that Midori no Hibi was made before Ai Kora)

************************

Midori No Hibi is a story of a High School delinquent (well not really, he's a big softie at heart) who wakes up one day to find that his right hand has transformed into a girl! What's more the girl turns out to have a crush on him! what'll happen to the his peaceful high school life? Hilarity ensues!

Note: Midori No Hibi does have an anime adaptation, but it doesn't matter which one you see first.

************************

Ai Kora is the story of Maeda Haichibei. This young man is not quite like most guys, who only lust after beautiful girls. This pervert lusts after specific and discrete parts instead. When he moves to Tokyo to attend school, he finds himself living in a dormitory with five girls, each of which possesses one of the ideal physical features he desires: cat-like blue eyes, bullet-train breasts, a deep dulcet voice, straight “anime-esque” legs, or a waistline shaped like fine Japanese pottery. How can he manage to keep his wits when surrounded by these women?

************************

Koharu no Hibi is vastly different from the two mangas I've mentioned, for the plain and simple reason of "that bitch be crazy!"

Koharu Mutsuki is in love with her senpai Akira Torii. Though she has never confessed to him and prefers to watch him silently from a distance. Wait, did I say watch? I meant STALK. That's right, Koharu is a grade-A stalker. I can't even begin to describe her level of obsession and yanderism. You just have to read and see it for yourself.

Just some instances of her stalkerism to really prove my point

Shaman King. The manga is better than the anime, so double points to you.
It's...actually action oriented, but it goes far deeper than that. I recommend at least looking it up.
Durarara! is also great plot-wise. I'm not sure if you'd consider that action-oriented...There's a lot of acton, but it's not the main theme or anything. I think.

Psycho Pass is pretty graphic on the violence. Whoever made this must be pretty psycho himself. I'd say this is an adult only anime :o

I recommend Rosario Vampire manga. You've no idea what you're missing, lol. The anime was an absolute disgrace though, so dont go off of that.

I just finished Mirai Nikki (Future Diary) and simply cannot stress how great it is, I recommend it whole-heartedly. It's a tad slow to begin with but the final 6 episodes are phenomenal, literally left in tears and feels and a dropped jaw. Best anime of the year for me. Give it a gander.

Aaahh.... my heart... is so at peace right now...so relaxing... <3

There really is nothing like a simple, cute, pure, honest, romance story to heal your heart and make you feel like everything is ok with the world.

If you're tired of all the drama, violence, meaningless sex, or whatever, and just want to relax with a nice, sweet story, go give Bonnouji a try.

It's really nothing more than the story of one adult couple's romance. No drama. No bulls***.
And yes, they are an adult couple. They have jobs, they go out drinking with their friends, and they do make love. If it were any other manga, it would be boring as hell, but somehow the way the characters in Bonnouji live their lives, and how they interact with each other, is written so well, and so real, that one can't help but open up their hearts and just go with the flow of the story.

So yeah, that's my two cents about this. It's finished in japan but there's still two chapters left to be translated so you might wanna wait until it's done before you start it.

Also, let's try and get this thread some more action!

It's decent, imo. A lot of things aren't properly explained though. I recommend watching the OVAs before season 2.

I quite like it. If you're interested in it for the mechas or action, though, I'd recommend against watching it. The mecha scenes are probably the worst parts of the anime.

The best parts of the anime are definitely the characters and their interactions with each other IMO.

Post by: Arikado on January 07, 2014, 10:29:48 PM
Well, I am slightly interested in the mecha genre, but not really. I did like Gurren Lagann. I tried watching the first few episodes of G Gundam, but I just couldn't get into it. lol Actually, I never really got into the Gundam series in general.
Title: Re: Anime/Manga recommendation thread
Post by: Light on January 09, 2014, 03:48:55 PM
It's definitely not Gurren Lagann, that's for sure. There's a lot less emphasis on action, and it's not as over-the-top, if at all. They're not really comparable.

One thing I need to mention is that Star Driver starts out quite slow. The first few episodes concentrate on character development, and it only really picks up around episode 7 or so.

So, I watched Nisemonogatari and Nekomonogatari: Kuro. And I'm planning to watch Monogatari series Second Season much later.

The question is, I was planning to watch Spice and Wolf. But just like monogatari series, Spice and Wolf also seems like a dialogue heavy kind of anime.

So should I watch Spice and Wolf or should I watch something with a different feeling to it first?

The thing is, I'm not even sure if Spice and wolf is similiar to monogatari or not. I only know that their both dialogue heavy animes.

Edit: I decided to watch OPM
