Title: When does a game become retro?
Post by: O:\msg on June 26, 2012, 04:55:40 PM
Always confused me this, retro basically means from the past, so PS2 games should be retro, but most people think they aren't. So what do you guys class as retro?
It's kinda confusing because Persona 4 on PS2 was released in 2008, games such as Gears of war on 360 were released 2 years prior.

Is there some kind of rule you guys use, or a general feeling about what is classed as retro?

When you get a nostalgia boner when hearing the soundtrack, it's retro.

I dont think of retro as a group of games.
I think of it more as a personal classification

Many people I know consider FFVII and the likes as retro (and everything older), while I consider it Super Mario Bros. - Era and the likes

Let's consider what's considered retro.

I've looked it up on Wikipedia and have gauged what is considered retro, and believe up to the fifth generation of gaming (and all games released in that time frame, barring the ones from the next generation released while the previous generation was still in full swing) is considered retro. We are currently at the seventh generation of gaming.

When the eighth generation of gaming is released, the sixth will be considered retro.

See how I've deducted it?

The Wii is retro? This (http://nintendocompositions.tumblr.com/post/25297568104/super-paper-mario-soft-light) gives me a nostalgiagasm. It is definitely not retro.

8, 16, 32.and 64 bit games are retro that includes arcade games from the 90s

Ps1 and xbox i consider classics

ps2 and up xbox360, gamecube and wii are all too new to be considered rretro or classic.

a game boy is also considered retro

But the PS1's a 32bit system, isn't it?

Yeah, it's a 32bit system, just did a quick a google search.

And this is my definition of retro: PS1, N64 and anything older than that.
And by handhelds: Gameboy color and older.

The way I see it, what is retro will never change. I don't think they want to muddy up the line that has been drawn, if retro is something that engulfs platforms and games progressively as the decades go by, then eventually a lot of things will be retro. I like to think what has already been established as retro will only be retro, nothing else will, dood.
