In my opinion modern RPG's are much worse than previous generations, I prefer JRPG's such as Final Fantasy over Elder Scrolls but not by much. JRPG's are virtually dead this gen, we have a couple like Tales of Vesperia and Xenoblade which are decent but nothing mind blowing.
On the other hand WRPG's like Fallout 3 and Mass Effect have arrived big time and I love them, but I don't see them as RPG's, I see them as shooters with RPG elements. It's brilliant they blended the two genres together so well, but it's kinda killing RPG's.
What are your thoughts?

i feel today's JRPGs are getting too generic. almost all of them feel the same and story is similar in some way. i think they need a fresh start (even though i still love them). while western RPGs as fallout or elder scrolls, well, i believe they are something videogames needed. total control of gameplay, find it refreshing and love the freedom it gives you. I still consider them RPGs, well, action RPGs since they do have the elements for it such as leveling up, character customization, etc

Well, the classic RPG formula IS getting reused every single time. Maybe it's better to blend it with other genres. To be honest, RPG is better that way, hell, I even think it's unintentionally made to be blend with other genres.

JRPG's seem to be living in the shadows of the old final fantasy's, since they have to find ways to rise from above this self-proclaimed titan....they tend to not put much effort into the story and focus on beating FF's weakness, its repetitive gameplay formula. But really they should be trying to improve the stories since thats the entire point of RPG's.

For some reason whenever I hear jrpgs are doing worse I feel like blaming x360

I enjoy RPG mechanics in games but my favorite games are free roam platformers such as Spyro the Dragon, so RPGs such as Elder Scrolls is nice, but to make it killer I want a real story to follow otherwise I cant enjoy it as much. These days everyone talks and wants multiplayer, yeah, its cool I guess to play with people, but I want more in the main game. I dont know if I make sense... but yeah :p

I agree 100% I like to take my time, sit back and enjoy an long, epic, story driven adventure. I like a bit of co op with my friends every now and again but its just quick, mindless fun I think.

Huh. I kinda forgot the Roleplaying part in the RPG.
-
Well, some RPG's are so rushed.
Others... you don't feel the passion & devotion of the old games.
Also, they don't change things up lately.... because cash cows.
-
its a mixed opinnion but I like the older RPG's more
-
I agree with you Melfice.
There are some okay/decent RPG's now but THE best system for RPG's is in my opinion the SNES... and that time has ended ... too bad :/
-
The SNES and PSX were the best imo, both systems had some of the most loved RPG's of all time, RPG's from the 90's were amazing.
-
How about RPG's that get too wrapped up in itself and too serious? Ever play one of those? I find it annoying.
Its sometimes refreshing to play something like, say, Zenonia, a Korean RPG that isnt so wrapped up in itself and actually acknowledges it as an RPG and makes fun of it from time to time (Its goofy, I know, but I like goofy XD)

Come on! JRPG's are the best! who doesnt want to save the world and be the ultimate OVERLORD at the age of 16 i mean duuh-
No WRPG's are like you said shooters with RPG elements, however elderscrolls has done allot for us! one of my favorite ones ever.
For JRPG's I enjoy the brimming chibi ones! Those are best! and usualy have much better stories then most serious JRPG's one of my favorite ones in this are the Atelier Iris series!
So all in all- id go with chibi JRPG
