No they were awesome, and still are, Dogtanian is great! I don't think many are american, some I know are french, canadian and british but i'm not sure about some others.

so none of 'em are japanese, though so.Also I believe there was a show that was about 2 cats who have this cool black jet plane and beat bad cats with it,I actually liked that one.

I grew up in the 90's so the only shows I can recognize from that list are Thundercats, He - Man, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Transformers.
And yes Priom, the show was called Swat Kats.

90's are ok to be in here too though, I think 80's and 90's shows were much better than today.

The original Gundam series was pretty good, some would say it paved the way for the best mecha shows that came after it. Such as Evangelion.

As for the original question, I'd have top say they're both on par. I think it all comes down to personal taste. I mean, I loved some shows back then (like Thundercats and TMNT) and hated others. Just like now, I love some shows (like the Legend of Korra and Young Justice), and hate others. Though, I have to say that I'm hating on more shows now than I did back then.

If you're talking about actual Japanese anime(like the rest of this board) then they both have their pros and cons.
If it's just animation in general (or rather, western) then the films back then were so much better... So, so much better..
I grew up watching them instead of 90's films like my friends, because my mother, like myself, is a very nostalgic person : P
