Now this is indeed newsworthy, for Disney to actually make a movie that is worthy of such a terrible title, it has been named "one of the biggest flops in cinema history."
Anyway, Disney is expected lose a whooping 200 million dollars (or 126 million pounds) on the movie John Carter. Critics have been literally butchering it ever since its release saying......
"To watch John Carter is to wonder where in this jumbled space opera one might find the intuitive sense of wonderment and awe Stanton brought to Finding Nemo and WALL-E"-Peter Debruge of Variety.
"Nothing in John Carter really works, since everything in the movie has been done so many times before, and so much better."-Owen Glieberman of Entertainment Weekly.
and also "Except for a strong cast, a few striking visuals and some unexpected flashes of humor,John Carter is just a dreary, convoluted trudge — a soulless sprawl of computer-generated blippery converted to 3-D."-Christy Lemire of the Associated Press.
However John Carter did manage to pull together with 51% in Rotten Tomato's website, though outside critics beg to differ in terms of its watch-ability.

I want to see that, it looks good on the trailers. I doubt it's a really bad film.
-
But to lose -that- much money, something must have gone wrong~
-
My guess is the title that caused it to lose profit. I know, it's stupid, but it's a big possibility.

Here's 5 reasons why it flopped according to Yahoo: http://uk.movies.yahoo.com/blogs/editors-20111013/five-reasons-why-john-carter-bombed-165908666.html

I once read an article about hollywood flops. There was this one movie which grossed $45. You read that right.

Worse. $30

It was given the title of "John Carter". Doesn't really say anything more than that actually. It would be better if it went something like: "John Carter: The King of Whatever" or something. At least we have a good idea what it's about.

Apparently, I was talking about the same movie. My bad, for wrong info :P
-
Well I did say "one" of the biggest flops, not -the- biggest flop. But still its a pretty impressive title.
-
Eh, no. John Carter is still a bigger bomb than Zyzzyx Road. The latter took only about 1.3 million dollars to produce.
-
Yeah but surely it cant be -the- biggest flop, got to be something else that did worse, otherwise this would have been much bigger news

I would think that would be paradoxical.
Think about it, Zyzyx road only grossed $30. If people were to report on this and say "This movie only grossed $30 on its opening weekend", wouldn't that make people think "Is the movie really THAT bad? Maybe I have to go and see it to find out." Which would in turn just increase sales and increase notoriety.
