An important question to all BSB supporters.
A Dutch holiday is in danger. I'll talk about it in my upcoming neko vlog as well.
On 11 November and also on 5-6 Decemeber (It depends on the area you live in. Some celebrate it on the 11th, and others on the 5th & 6th.) we celebrate Sinterklaas. (Sint-Nicolaas)
This children's holiday is extremely close to Christmas. (Which we celebrate as well) Yet, instead of Santa Claus, there is a holy man involved. Called Sinterklaas. And instead of elves working for him, he has people working for them.
Because Sinterklaas walks over the roofs at night and let's his helpers go through chimney's to deliver the presents to the children, they get black due to the ashes and materials inside the chimney. To ease the costume and make the story more real for the children, the helpers (called "Black Pete") are displayed completely black.
Now, these Black Petes aren't abused or anything. Yet, the United Nations thinks that this is racist. And many people are sadly following suit without talking to a Dutch person about it. It's as stupid as making Santa's elves bigger because the little people are complaining or not serving turkey at Thanksgiving because Greenpeace is complaining.
To be clear, I'm no racist in any kind. A couple of my buddies over the internet are actually not white. And does it make a difference? Nah, not really.
Think about how it would feel if your local tradition suddenly becomes controversial and the whole world around you blindly follows suit. We need to stand up against this idiotic move of this world. Please aid the Dutch people like myself and spread the word how silly this is.
The Dutch people made a Facebook page and after one day, it got over 1 million likes. In addition to that, the first statement of a researcher of the UN claimed that only the Netherlands should stop. This clearly shows their research isn't going deep enough since it's also celebrated in Belgium. - Sigh -
If you are interested in signing our petitions, tell me. I gladly give you the link(s).
I'm open to discussing this matter, yet keep it civil. ;3.
Thanks for listing to my rant and have a great day.

Yeah, silly no?

Welcome to modern society Jonez.
Pretty much, I remember when the nursery rhyme "Baa Baa Black Sheep" was banned just for having the word black in it. Some even changed it to Baa Baa Rainbow Sheep. Bloody ridiculous.
-
I also heard in schools you couldn't call them blackboards anymore, it had to be chalkboards. God knows what banning the word black is actually going to achieve. Surely promoting black as equal is the way to go, not hiding it.

The funny thing is that there is an online tool for schools to communicate more easily called BlackBoard.
Yet, as Teacher in training, we are supposed to use more smartboards now. Since, according to research, children get color confused. Due to you writing on a green/black board with white/yellow chalk. Uhu.

Well, we have in Belgium here something similar with an old children rhyme. In that rhyme there is a line where it says "daddy will hit you." when a child ruins the garden of somebody. Since this is consider violence towards children and illegal.... This rhyme isn't being said anymore.
Huh never knew that was a thing, but yeah thats dumb of them to think its racist :l
We have a lot of petitions to fight against this shit.

But it is racist. How can you say it isn't?

Yeah, the British public are pretty touchy about this stuff. I can't help but think it has less to do with equality and more to do with fear.

There are so many things banned, it's just silly to think about it.

I do hope you're being sarcastic.

Sinterklaas is racist.
-
It isn't like it's meant to represent blackface. It's meant to represent an average joe who gets soot all over him due to the nature of his work.
What's next? Ban soot for being racist?
-
Everything with the word "black" in it is considered racist. Just that statement is racist by itself.
If you want equality, make everything with white, yellow, red, brown in it illegal too.

+1 for both these comments. These are beautiful comments!

Btw yes I'm being sarcastic

Maybe more clear signs of sarcasm would help ;)

You know I did it on purpose didn't you?

Thinking about it, no one has any sort of right to react on this but the offender and the offended. Really. If dark-skinned people see this as racist, then so be it. No one but THEM should speak up. Anyone else is just jumping the bandwagon. The best Belgium can do is justify why tradition holds that Black Petes should be painted black because Belgium is the one that holds that tradition.

We did, but the UN doesn't want to listen. They say that we aren't allowed to voice ourselves since we will just defend our holiday... At any cost.
Besides, what am I doing right now :P?
-
I've seen black people being painted black just for shits and giggles.

... Wow. They actually said that?
-
Turns out it's all made up by a single volunteer in the UN. The UN doesn't back her statements.

This is a bit more believable, at least. Hard to imagine the whole UN actually making a fuss on an old holiday.
However, I'm a still confused on what to actually believe. :|
Can anyone link me on the news?

If black people are offended by the word black, they are racist.. to themselves.
Getting words with black banned and not words with white, yellow, red and whatever is racist in itself as well.
-
That's a parody website. Guy's a master troll.

The world we live in:
A place where it's completely okay to ban a long-celebrated traditional holiday because there are people depicted that could be construed as racist, but during a different holiday it's okay if someone dresses up and acts like a stereotypical depiction of a race (i.e. someone dressing up and acting like Crazy Horse) just because it's a holiday where you dress in costume and pretend you're someone you're not.
(and believe me, if you do that and say you're not trying to be racist, then it'll be a socially acceptable thing unless someone in your vicinity is offended by it...not that it's any less offensive)
