But we are already in an energy crisis, so why burn mass amounts of fuel (enough to propel the shuttle through space for a year or so) and find that there are no energy sources that could be used back on earth. Bear in mind that Mars most likely has no life or never did and therefore has no fossil fuels. Even if we -did- find usable forms of energy over there, we would need to salvage enough to make up for all the fuel we burned to get there in the first place to salvage them :p
