Microsoft has announced it will retire Windows Live Messenger in favour of Skype.
A blog post revealed the instant messaging tool will be shut down during the first quarter of 2013, in all countries except mainland China. It is not currently known how long the Chinese service will live on for.
The news comes a year-and-a-half after Microsoft purchased Skype for $8.5 billion (£5 billion).
Late October's release of Skype 6.0 for Windows and Mac, in which users can sign in to Skype through a Microsoft account and simultaneously absorb Messenger contacts, was the first move in the switchover.
"We will work with you over the next few months to help you transition and offer information and help along the way," wrote Tony Bates, president of the Skype Division at Microsoft. "To help you learn how to get the most out of Skype, be on the lookout for some special offers later this year as you join your Messenger friends in the migration."
Windows Live Messenger originally launched in 1999 as MSN Messenger and has consistently been one of the world's most popular messaging platforms.
On its 10th anniversary in 2009, it boasted over 330 million active users every month, but this number has since dwindled.
According to a June 2011 report from OPSWAT, Windows Live Messenger still enjoyed 40.67 per cent of the global instant messenger market share, compared to Skype's 27.39 per cent. However, TechCrunch claims the service may have lost 200 million users since 2010.
Skype, on the other hand, is still on the rise and claims to bring in 40 million users at peak times.
"We're confident that Skype provides a better experience and even stronger network – today and even more so in the future, especially with the addition of the Messenger network," wrote Windows Live's GM, Brian Hall, in the final post on the "Inside Windows Live" blog.

I can promise you that the transition is going to be really messy, especially to those who don't actively use Skype.

This could result in a loss of activity and users of Msn just not bothering anymore or finding a different program that offers the same experience.

Isn't the transition taking place because of this reason?

Well, I kinda meant it in the sense that a loss of activity within that sector as a whole will occur, as in nobody will bother with Microsoft when it comes to IM's afterwards.

though I think its more of a money issue, they're most likely just trying to cut costs.

Hahahahah, just when I was discussing with Jonez on how dead MSN has become.

It's not like I ever used it, I prefer forums where I can disappear if I fancy a beer or a fap(or both) then just return to reply later without having to go through all the hassle of explaining. I'd never get to speak to friends in Australia without forums either because of the time zones.

Good riddance MSN. :P

Skype is all sorts of better.
Unless you have a phone where Skype doesn't work on.

Where did you find this? I googled what should bring your source up and all I could find was one page mentioning this as a rumor and a bunch of other pages talking about how they're getting rid of Myspace integration or something.

That's my problem right there. I don't have any actual cell phone service, therefore cannot use my phone's 3G capabilities. As of right now, however, Skype can't use Wi-Fi, only 3G. I'd use Skype on my phone if I could, as a shitty alternative to paying for minutes or whatnot, but right now I can't.

I still have a computer to use Skype on, but when I don't have access to a computer it gets kind of annoying because I have a few friends on Skype that aren't on any of the other IM services offered by Trillian mobile (which, Skype isn't offered to use on Trillian mobile).

I just googled "Msn will shut down" and got that. Fairly recent news.

It's because hotmail is Windows Live, which is a Microsoft-run service.

Well, I'm looking forward to the change.
I really like Skype, and I tried the "login with a Microsoft account" and it worked like a charm.

So yeah, I'm looking forward to the move.
