no....at least in face to face you have the ability to use gestures and behaviours to show disinterest and get away from a conversation.
When talking with a phone you and the other person has to be in an agreement so you can put the phone down and stop talking.

I usually just try to quickly stop the conversation before th person I'm talking to gets a chance to have a proper reaction.
Usually by pretending I'm busy.
It's especially hard to talk to family members on the phone.....

Talking to family you usually don't talk to is kinda awkward, but not as bad as strangers for me. I'd risk getting in trouble at work by not making an important call.

I don't usually talk to any family members other than my parents and brother unless it's absolutely impossible to avoid.

Which.....doesn't really help much when I actually have to talk to 'em.

I'm with Miz on this one but phone conversations annoy me more than they scare me. It's just annoying that you can't read any visual cues that's integral to a proper conversation, precisely why I keep my phone conversations short. A single US dollar's worth of phone balance lasts me a month or two.

I think the reason for this is because I'm a copycat at social interactions. I mimic the other person's accent and mannerisms to warm up to them, which is very hard to do on a phone. If we were to meet IRL, expect me to stay silent for the first few days and then suddenly act like we've been friends for years on the next. Without this ability to mimic, I would feel like I'm socially crippled.
