I don't know if this was a joke, but if it isn't, it's not the same thing. In Digimon, Mega is an actual evolution stage. In Pokémon, Mega Evolutions are like a one-battle only power-ups.

Dangit, i's really hard to keep myself spoiler free for X/Y when EVERYONE on the internet keeps taking about it.
That whole Mega evolution thing would have ben an awesome surprise when I'm finally playing the game.

Well, not really, given there will probably be an in-game tutorial for that, since it's triggered by an item.
In fact, I don't remember the conditions, but you can receive a Torchic holding a Mega Stone via an event...I think it's a pre-order thing, IDK, too lazy to check.

Since for me it's mostly about the competitive scene, especially now since my youth days are over and Pokemon doesn't really have the same adventurous effect on me, I like to know everything about the combat system before I delve into it. I'd be pissed if I only found out about Mega evolution after I had already progressed like half way through the game and I'd be like "Oh so that's what that stone does, well shit."

Yes. Yes I do.
I almost never enjoy a game when it reaches my "allowed spoiler threshold". Once I've reached a point where I've gotten a lot of details about a game, without actually playing it, I lose interest in it immediately.
