Heard that Persona was made by Atlus, so I'm gonna give it a chance and play through the handheld series. Hopefully it'll be as difficult as EO.

If you have a PS3 get Persona 3 FES.
I haven't played Persona 4 yet but I've heard that it's even better than 3 (Which was an already amazing game).

All in all, the Persona series are still part of the MegaTen series so its difficulty level is harder than the average RPG.
Though the Persona 3 for the PSP is considerably easier than the PS2 version. Which is why I recommend getting the FES version from the PSN. It has the original Persona storyline PLUS the after story game which adds another 20-40 hours worth of content.

Well I'd rather avoid any payment for the games since I don't have money to splash around. So any PS3 games is a no-no. The Persona games available on  the PSP will have to do.

Persona P3P is still a good game don't get me wrong. One of the advantages it has over the PS2 version is that overworld explorations is just point and click rather than a character walking around. It's sorta made to be more visual-novel like, which is is important for a game like persona where character interactions and time management are essential. Also it has the option of playing as a female protagonist. It alters the storyline by quite a bit and most of the Social Links have been restructured for a female hero so you get different (and essentially more) details about the world and the story.
