Nah, they'd still keep the price low.  They lower the price to increase sales, raising the price again would then decrease it, they're not that stupid. PS3s will eventually become limited though, I doubt they'll keep manufacturing them for long once PS4 comes out.

they only stopped making ps2s a few years ago so the ps3 still has at least a couple of years left

True, but the differences in manufacturing prices between the PS2 and PS3 must surely decrease it's time alongside the PS4. I doubt it'll stay alive as long as the PS2 did.

The reason the PS2 was still going successful even at it's later years was it's low cost and great library of games. In developing countries like India, the PS2 was entertainment at a budget. I remember seeing licensed distributors selling first hand PS2's at just Rs.5000, which comes to about 74 USD. About 50 when it comes to glorious British currency.

Fist was explaining how it was good due to it's low price and massive selection of games (most of which were nostalgia inducing). The PS3 has been available for quite a while and it's still pretty damn expensive at £100, which is the cheapest model you can buy and the most expensive being £250. At the moment I really doubt it will be in the same situation as the PS2, unless Sony starts to feel really generous in the coming years. You have to take into account how much it would cost to manufacture a PS3, added with shipping costs and then how much it sells for, Sony still needs to make some profit out of that and considering a PS3 obviously costs more to make than a PS2 it's a bit of a different situation.
The moment a PS3 becomes available for £50 or lower, I will admit that I am wrong.
