I could never figure out what to say to a person whose relative passed away. Do I offer an apology? That would make it seem that death is somehow my fault or that I'm apologizing for whatever the cause of death was; which is just bullshit. Do I offer a vague notion that he or she "is in a better place?" How could I? I have never been dead, nor have I talked to a person who has died to tell me what happened. Can I say I "I understand what you're going through..."? That would be arrogant of me, thinking that I could ever understand or relate to how much that person's death could have affected you, since life affects life in varying degrees.

I guess the only acceptable response to say is just to "live on, but never forget." Accept the death, grieve, then live on. Keep the memories of that person alive in your heart. And live on.
